Offshore Petroleum Association SA (OPASA)
The Offshore Petroleum Association of South Africa (known as OPASA) was officially launched in May 1999. The Department of Minerals and Energy, and others interested in the upstream industry of South Africa, joined with companies involved in the offshore exploration and production of hydrocarbons to announce this organisation.
The formation of OPASA was a direct result of the success the then Soekor petroleum licensing unit (PLU) had in promoting offshore exploration opportunities to local and international companies. Membership in the association is open to any oil company which is the partner or operator in an offshore exploration or mining lease awarded by the State.
OPASA provides a forum for formal and informal discussion and information exchange, practical co-operation, and joint liaison with the State on specific issues. A prime objective is to co-operate with the State and all stakeholders in promoting health, safety, and sound environmental practices.
Activities in which OPASA is involved in include: general public awareness of the offshore petroleum industry, promoting compliance with good oilfield practices, promoting care of the environment, liaison with interested and affected parties, pooling of resources for emergency response, industry dialogue with the State and co-operation on operational.
